BABY MILK ACTION A British-based consumer pressure group, Baby Milk Action campaigns for changes in baby milk marketing and to foster correct infant feeding practices. It was established originally as the Baby Milk Action Coalition in 1979 under the sponsorship of major development charities to organise a boycott in the UK of Nestlé products. It is part of the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), which unites over 100 groups in 60 countries. The papers of the group consist of the minutes of national and international committee meetings and the AGM; Annual Reports; Directors’ Annual Reports; financial records; and all substantive correspondence arranged by subject (routine correspondence is weeded annually). Baby Milk Action also maintains an archive of information sources, including press-cuttings, its monthly newsletter, and the newsletter Breaking The Rules, which monitors violations of the WHO/UNICEF Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes. Unpublished papers are largely confidential but may be made available to bona fide researchers, who should give full details of the nature of their enquiry in writing to the National Coordinator.

BAKERS, FOOD AND ALLIED WORKERS’ UNION The union for workers in the baking industry and related trades was originally established in 1861 as the Amalgamated Union of Operative Bakers. The records are retained at the Union’s head office. The material consists of various branch minutes for the whole period of the last century; annual conference minutes; executive council and regional and district minutes; annual reports of the Union and its executive council conference; and correspondence for the past five years only (except for that relating to special events). Subject files are also maintained on working conditions within the industry and on individual companies. Bound copies of the Union’s journals since 1898 (now known as The Food Worker, published monthly) are also available at the head office. Applications for access should be made to the General Secretary. There is a published official history, Bakers’ Union: Our History 1859–1977.

BALTIC COUNCIL IN GREAT BRITAIN The Council is a representative organisation established in 1947 by the Association of Estonians in Great Britain, the Latvian National Council in Great Britain, and the Lithuanian Association in Great Britain, with the object of combining the work of these bodies to further the interests of the Baltic States, largely by the lobbying of the British Government and the education of public opinion.

The papers of the Council have been retained partly at its offices and partly in the personal care of the Chairman. Most records date from 1984 (prior to which the Council operated only on an ad hoc basis) and include the minutes of the Council meet-ings; Annual Reports and conference reports; annual accounts; files of correspondence with government, parliamentarians, members of the European Parliament, universities and religious organisations, and Baltic organisations in other countries, and assorted subject files. Further enquiries should be addressed to the Chairman at the Council’s registered office.

BAND OF HOPE The Union was founded in 1855 to coordinate and promote the work of the Band of Hope temperance organisations throughout the country.
